Construction of the second stage of Sydney Metro tunnels project will begin this year on the twin tunnels that will start at Chatswood and travel beneath Sydney Harbor, through the CBD to Sydenham and on to Bankstown.
Planning includes: delivering 16.5km of new metro rail between Chatswood and Sydenham, including 15.5km of new twin railway tunnels under Sydney Harbor and the Sydney CBD; 7 new metro railway stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross (North Sydney), Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt St, Central (new underground platforms), and Waterloo.
Construction sites will be established in the Sydney CBD this year. By the end of 2018, the first boring machine will be in the ground carving out the new tunnels.
Local government welcomed the news and said the scale of project would rival any mega projects across the globe and ensured Sydney was being prepared for the future.
Once completed, Sydney Metro will have capacity of a new metro train every two minutes in each direction under the Sydney CBD and 31 metro stations from Rouse Hill to Bankstown.
When boring machine is excavating, self drilling hollow bar can be used at the same time to support and reinforce surrounding rock and soil to keep structure stable and secure.
